the fillmore poster lives on

i've been fortunate for the past 12 years, to have the oppurtunity of creating many rock posters for the fillmore in san francisco........its the only place i know........where you can see a great rock show........and then get handed a free poster on the way out of the auditorium.......its a san francisco institution............and we are all very fortunate that it is still around..........here is a preview of my latest poster for the"dawes / blitzen trapper" double bill show that will happen this tuesday night november 15th.....it should be a good one.....if you are going.....be sure to wait till end of the show to recieve your poster..............i had a some good fun creating it............

after 3 years of making some great work in my studio based in southeast portland..........
its time to move.........
i'll be moving into a larger studio here in the pdx........
but i'll miss this old studio for sure............
i had some great artistic breakthroughs here ............
and spent many all nighers as well, so i could make my deadlines..........
it will be sorely missed......
but i'm excited about my new studio..........
and the possibilities to create some larger then lafe scale works.......

over the years........ i've gotten to work with some great art directors.......... one of my favorite's is Arlene Owseichik from Bill Graham Presents in San Francisco.

Arlene's been creating magic there for over 20 years.......... and when ever i get to create a fillmore poster........ its Arlene who gives me a call......... her latest assignment for me was this poster for Willie Nelson's recent 4 night stint @ the fillmore............ Arlene always lets me have alot of fun with these posters....... as i've been creating them for 12 years now..............

i got to create a piece for the "Hanged man" card............ and really had a lot of fun creating it.........
the deck will be released in 2011 through superpunch............. and the art exhibit will take place at bear&bird gallery in south florida in march 2011......

was going through some old photo's and found these shots of the studio.......... i think they are from my old studio in downtown l.a............ it was located in a building we refered to as "the 900 building"......that place sure had alot of history........ luckily i got to part of some of it....... miss that old building..........

beyond eden art fair

it looks lebasse projects gallery will be exhibiting some of my mixed media sculptures..........this weekend in los angeles during the beyond eden art fair...........the fair is fairly new.......but its become extremely popular.........and will be the biggest art event in los angleles this month.............my work will be located in the lebasse projects gallery section.......along with the work of andrew hem.........morgan slade.......melissa haslem..........and a special installation by the street artist........shark toof.............

this fair will host seven other new contemporary galleries in the los angeles area...........along with the cannibol flower's 10 year anniversary...........which of course was my 1st exhibit event that i showed work at in los angeles............6 years ago............most of the artists participating have l.c. and cannibol flower to thank........for exhibiting their work for the 1st time.........its great to see them still doing it a decade later............congradulations cannibol flower!

heres the skinny for the event............it opens saturday night...........with a big party..........and will be open all day on sunday for veiwing as well........the event is free to the public.....

i'm in the final stages of completing my 1st collection of work for 2010.............its title is "bric a brac"...........and the opening reception for the new exhibit will happen this friday night.........march 19........at lyrik.............in portland ,or.........once the collection is installed and photographed i'll be posting some images of the new work............most likely friday morning...........

"bric a brac" .....is a new series of work by j.shea , created and derived by rumaging through garage sales.....flea markets and secondhand shops......often these collected objects are broken......lost.......or forgotten.........and the process of tracking them down and finding them is just as meticulous as thethe work in the studio of reconfiguring them and breeding a new life into them............since relocating to portland 2 year ago.......shea has been collectingthese objects and emersing himself in the strange world of thrift store and flea market culture..........finding inspiration not only in the items for sale but in the people that create those environments like the vendors and the regulars............this new collection of work is created in various media......includingsculpture........carving............assemblege work.............either freestanding........hanging.......or in the artists familar shadow box style........the newcollection of work will remain on exhibit till april 22,2010

the good folks at compound gallery invited blaine fontana and myself to do some live painting.......... this session took place a few weeks ago @ rotture in the s.e. warehouse district of portland , it's an event called "live & direct"............... we painted on the back balcony........... it was a bit cold......... but not too bad for our 1st live paint session in this city............... after a few live paints in los angeles.......... it was great to collaberate with blaine again......... and paint in a large scale.....

the installation 5 tour came to a close in los angeles @ the space in culver city........... it was nice to visit my former residence for the show and see many friends at the event............ the artists were asked to donated some books or prints for the charity as well....... so keiko and i made a little creature to donate....... my new friend "cooper" had the lucky raffle ticket and won our 9-kei creature............ congrates cooper!

the scion installation 5 tour came to a close on saturday night in los angeles............. its been a very fun tour all year long.............. i was able to attend the exhibits in miami........ minneapolis........ portland......... and lastly in los angeles............ on sept. 30th all the art will be auctioned off with 100% of the proceeds going to creative capitol...............
thanks scion for inviting me on the tour the last 2 years............ and supporting my creative expression.....

i guess its been a bit..........so heres what i've been up to........
i had the oppurtunity to paint a 24 ft. live paint mural with some friends at the magic/pool trade show in las vegas last week....
it was all put on by the good folks at glue network.............and it helped raise money for standup for kids...........a local las vegas charity...........so it was a 3 day session...........to cover 24 feet.............it turned out pretty cool.......
it was fun to paint with my old los angeles pals blaine fontana & joshua clay..........and also mix up styles with new friends.....

If you happen to be in san Francisco this weekend………….you can pick up one of my latest fillmore posters hot off the press………it's for the “ryan adams” show on Saturday night august 23rd………..yeah… the legendary fillmore……..the only venue in the country that still gives posters away after the show………..here is the painting in watercolor on 140 lbs arches cold press paper………………..

awhile back fellow artist “attaboy” the founder of hi fructose magazine asked if I would collaborate with him on a project………… here is the beginning stages of that collaboration…………. of “brine queen”………….i’ve got the head started………..the next step will be the body and the little world that she festers in………special thanks to “attaboy” for coming up with the cool idea…………………………..

well.........it was just a matter of time before i started one of these...........the studio has been super busy in 2008.........so this rig will make it easy for me to fill folks in on the latest projects and exhibitions...............

studio 9 has relocated to portland............after a two month sabbatical in brazil and traveling across the u.s...............the new studio was set up in april just in time for our "haley collective" installation show at scion space in culver city, ca........entitled "travel & document".....it was a great opportunity to create some large scale sculpture as its one of the largest exhibiting spaces in los angeles...........here is a link to some images of the work from the show...........with my good friends.........racecar 13, larry mills, vanae rivera, & j.rivas

i've been fortunate to receive a few invitations to some big group shows this summer........the 1st was the "crimes on canvas" exhibit in las vegas curated by the good folks at m modern gallery....... here are my pieces i exhibited entitled "drift" and "metal"............
